The obvious way to manage risk is with a stop loss. That might not always be the best way to manage risk. There are some trades where you thesis relies on other markets or other conditions and price is not always the final thing that you're looking at - maybe its relative strength, maybe its the short float, maybe you're waiting for something over earnings...etc Of course if you're losing massively you need to get out but there are times when maybe you want to stay in a trade because you still think its a good trade but you still want to manage that risk as well. What options do we have?
Managing risk efficiently
1) Hedge - if you are long something you can short another correlated asset.
2) Option Buy/sell - there are a lot of things you can do with options and they are a good hedging mechanism.
3) VIX
4) Close a portion
5) Size- trade a size that allows you to sit thru big swings.
