In fall of 2014, newly hired Shawn Davis put together a little group of gospel singers for the hospitals’ annual multicultural fair. Ever since then, The Environmental Services Gospel Choir, made up of housekeeping staff from both the day and night shift, can be found singing words of encouragement across the hospital. “I’m here to bring light into a dark situation,” says Shawn, who comes to UNC from New York City Transit Authority, working on railways. His long term goal is to become a psychiatrist, and you can see his personable approach in from him humming his way into the room to working together with the nurses and doctors to encourage a patient to take their walk.
More than just taking out the trash and cleaning a room, the housekeepers at UNC Health Care see their work as a supporting role in caring for patients. They don’t just clean rooms, they offer encouraging words and compassionate hearts to the patients at UNC Hospitals. This month’s video takes you on a journey with the Gospel Choir from behind-the-scenes to center stage.
