(I am sure he won’t admit this, but being forced to put rocks on top of driftwood to keep it down gives you less design flexibility. But aquascaping with driftwood and rocks can produce some great results.
The biggest thing that hit me while watching all of this was just the sheer size of the rocks he was putting in there. He was grabbing rocks that were pretty big in my opinion. And he was using a ton of them. We got to talking about hardscapes and he said that people simply don’t use enough rocks in their hardscapes. Oliver said something to the effect of, “A large tank needs a large amount of rocks."
You can hear in the video that Dave and I both questioned, “Um is that gonna go there?” when it came to the huge rocks being set seemingly obviously out of place on top of the driftwood.
He set the larger rocks in and then would pour some gravel in behind them. I have always kept spare gravel around, but never to be used in this form. (Typically I am adding gravel to cover plants roots, not support a monster rock 1/3 of the way up the tank.This video is longer than I would like it to be but I want you all to see the maneuvering of the big rocks in this aquascape….see the process. He goes, large, medium then small, with the driftwood aquarium setup.
The tank really starts to take shape when he puts the small rocks in at the end…
I was kinda shocked to hear a German say the french were the best aquascapers as well. I don't follow the Europeans as closely as I had thought.... I need to get across the pond and check out the scene.
