2017 Ethics Essay Award Dinner - Capt. Wendy Lawrence, guest speaker Video

Home
On September 21, 2017 the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership hosted the 30th Ethics Essay Awards dinner, honoring the best 3rd Class midshipmen’s papers of the 2016 academic year from NE 203, “Ethics and Moral Reasoning for the Naval Leader.” The class is devoted to studying ethical principles and applying them to challenging military case studies and scenarios midshipmen may encounter after commissioning. The dinner celebrates the second class midshipmen whose essays were chosen by their Ethics Instructors as the best.
The guest speaker for the event was Capt. Wendy Lawrence, class of 1981. A naval aviator, she has more than 1,500 hours flight time in six different types of helicopters and has made more than 800 shipboard landings. Selected as astronaut by NASA in March 1992, Lawrence has logged over 1225 hours in space.
Her father, Admiral William Lawrence, for whom the awards are named, was a man of great honor and integrity, former POW, a two time Superintendent, and is credited with helping create the Honor Concept at the Naval Academy. When explaining the concept of honor, Wendy Lawrence uses her father’s definition: “taking the hard right, instead of the easy wrong.” Her principal question of the night concerned stereotyping. She asked: What are the main ethical concerns about stereotyping? She answered with two illustrations gleaned from her own career; one concerning an individual who had been labeled as a "screw up" the other concerning cooperation with Russian cosmonauts on the International Space Station.

Midshipmen honorees: Midshipman 2/C Zach Johnson’s essay, “The Ethical Implications of Military Service in U.S. Democratic Tradition,” was the winner for the fall semester. Midshipman 2/C Andrew Adcox was chosen as the winner for the spring semester with his essay, entitled "The Moral Implications of Fully Autonomous Weapons Systems.”
Next, the class of 1958 presented the Larson Ethical Leadership Excellence award to Dr. Pam Schmidt, USNA Director of Academic Advising and a professor of Economics. She personally advises over 150 midshipmen every year.

About the Site 🌐

This site provides links to random videos hosted at YouTube, with the emphasis on random. 🎥

Origins of the Idea 🌱

The original idea for this site stemmed from the need to benchmark the popularity of a video against the general population of YouTube videos. 🧠

Challenges Faced 🤔

Obtaining a large sample of videos was crucial for accurate ranking, but YouTube lacks a direct method to gather random video IDs.

Even searching for random strings on YouTube doesn't yield truly random results, complicating the process further. 🔍

Creating Truly Random Links 🛠️

The YouTube API offers additional functions enabling the discovery of more random videos. Through inventive techniques and a touch of space-time manipulation, we've achieved a process yielding nearly 100% random links to YouTube videos.

About YouTube 📺

YouTube, an American video-sharing website based in San Bruno, California, offers a diverse range of user-generated and corporate media content. 🌟

Content and Users 🎵

Users can upload, view, rate, share, and comment on videos, with content spanning video clips, music videos, live streams, and more.

While most content is uploaded by individuals, media corporations like CBS and the BBC also contribute. Unregistered users can watch videos, while registered users enjoy additional privileges such as uploading unlimited videos and adding comments.

Monetization and Impact 🤑

YouTube and creators earn revenue through Google AdSense, with most videos free to view. Premium channels and subscription services like YouTube Music and YouTube Premium offer ad-free streaming.

As of February 2017, over 400 hours of content were uploaded to YouTube every minute, with the site ranking as the second-most popular globally. By May 2019, this figure exceeded 500 hours per minute. 📈
