We had to revisit the USDA Subtropical Research Center in Homestead, FL, after returning home with jackfruit from our last trip there just a couple weeks ago. Some of the jackfruit we selected from our last visit turned out to be amazing! So amazing that the skin just peeled right off & the center core could easily be pulled right out. We had to go back to get more to save up on these precious seeds.
To add importance to the matter, we have recently heard that the Research facility is under threat of being defunded by the current administration. The employees at the center are hopeful, but nobody really knows exactly what the outcome will be & there is a chance it could be closed down if Congress does not see its value. There could be a possibility we might not be able to return for these fruit hunting excursions.
Our goal through these food hunting video series is to captivate peoples attention when it comes to the diversity of fruit species (and other food crops.) so that we can spread appreciation to those living in the state & anyone who might want to travel to Florida for an agri-tourism visit.
