In this video, I talk about identifying your company culture. Rather than focusing on the company culture or brand itself, I suggest you focus on and build the company identity. This video is meant for people that are interested in startups or small businesses, as well as those that are interested in growing their company to a much larger business. This video is particularly relevant those that are interested in growth because company identity becomes increasingly more important as the company grows.
A firm’s identity encompasses the brand of its products as well as the corporate culture, and the perception of how people feel both external and externally about the company. I define it as the belief in the existence of the organization, its objectives, and how it operates.
A organizational identity becomes increasingly important as the company grows, because it’s stakeholders have recognize how it operates. As the company grows, the organization takes a life of its own and that is beyond what leadership can possibly do by itself. Each member of the leadership team becomes increasingly less important to the operations of the company.
Internally, each organizational member has to understand how they fit within the organization and its objectives. Externally, the organization’s stakeholders have to recognize what the company can and cannot do, before they ask the company to perform a particular task. This is why it is much more then the particular product brand of the company. external people recognize the underlying values of what the company represents, and then select into asks of the particular company.
In order to build an organizational identity, it’s important to ask internally and externally how the company is perceived. Then build a system to repeatedly demonstrate, and reiterate this identity for what you believe in them and they should be about. The change and building of this organizational is very slow, so don’t underestimate the length of time and effort it will take to build it. In addition, be very careful in the type of organizational identity that you were building such that it doesn’t become an organizational liability in the future.
