Morreu em plena ascenção em 1993, com quase a mesma idade que Glenn Gould. Seu legado em discos inclúi importantíssima coleção de peças de Chopin, que um painel de críticos americanos, reunidos em 1992 pelo American Record Guide, chegou a comparar às maiores gravações, "de Rubinstein a Cortot, de Guiomar Novaes a Martha Argerich." Thomas Frost foi mais longe. Em carta ao crítico Allan Kozin, do New York Times, o produtor de Horowitz, que também produziu a segunda versão de Antonio para as 51 Mazurcas, qualificou-as de "consideravelmente mais poéticas que as de Rubinstein." E a Stereo Review, de Nova York, que deu o título de "Melhor do Ano" para as 14 Valsas, imprimiu: "...Barbosa é possivelmente o melhor intérprete de Chopin de sua geração". O CD, com estas últimas gravações e mais os Lieder de Schubert, foi lançado no mercado americano dois dias depois que seu coração parou, em São Paulo, no dia 2 de setembro de 1993.
