PC Workstations sind groß, schwer, teuer, professionell und schnell … denkt man zumindest. Intel hat mit den Xeon-Workstationprozessoren eine eigene Reihe von auf Desktopprozessoren beruhenden CPUs. Der Intel Xeon in dieser Hewlett-Packard Workstation kostete bei Markteinführung 851 US$ und war damit deutlich teurer als ein vergleichbarer Intel Desktop Prozessor, z.B. der Core2Duo E8400 für 183 US$.

Die Workstation xw6600 macht einen guten, professionellen Eindruch. Was die Geschwindigkeit betrifft, kann die Workstation mit diesem Xeon aber nicht punkten. Anfangs recht flott beim Installieren, braucht diese Workstation für ein gerendertes Blender Bild aber über 10 Stunden, was man als sehr langsam bezeichnen kann und nicht den Erwartungen an eine Workstation CPU entspricht.

Linux kann Rechner schneller machen, muss aber nicht. Auch Linux Mint mit einer SSD kann den Flaschenhals der CPU nicht überwinden. Ein vergleichbarer Desktop-PC mit 8GB RAM und einer SSD ist erkennbar flotter, als diese Workstation. Beim Energieverbrauch ist die Workstation aber deutlich sparsamer, als anfangs bei sieben Lüftern vermutet.
