My gear fidget hand spinners have been so popular that there have been many (Chinese) clones (unauthorized counterfeits) and spin off videos based on them. i wanted to share some of the issues i have had making the gears for these hand spinner toys and some of the issues with sourcing the raw gear rod stock.
after an exhaustive search i found the only company in the entire united states willing to manufacture the gear rod for me in stainless steel. i was also looking for brass but that was an impossible task, and no one was willing to make them out of brass.
so in order to have the gear rod made just for my purposes out of stainless steel, i have to order $4k worth of material...50% of which will end up as chips!! it is not comforting to know that $2k worth of material will be wasted but it is the unfortunate truth of the circumstances regarding the manufacture of these hand spinners...and just one of the reasons why they are so expensive.
when i started making these gear spinners i only made a few and was happy with the source for steel gears, now that the demand has exploded, the SS gears were the only real solution....although an expensive one.
in the video it is obvious why i need to purchase the gear rod instead of attempting to make it myself.
