In this lesson I am going to teach you Correct pronunciation of Silent letters in English part 1. in order to learn spoken English correctly ,you need to learn English pronunciation properly. if you want to learn the tips of pronunciation , you have know the silent letters . There are almost 60% silent letters in English words. without learning this silent letters , you can not learn English pronunciation. So, let, begin.
By silent letter, we mean that the letters that is not sound in English words. we can say it the letters which are not pronounced in words.
There are some basic rules of silent letter. by learning this rules , it is very easy to learn the pronunciation of those silent letter. Today you are going to learn all rules of silent letters in English words. you will be taught all the words of silent letters according to the English alphabet.
at this phase , you will be shown the words of English alphabet from A – E. in this lesson you are going to learn silent letters in English part 1. gradually you will be taught all kinds of rules of English silent letters from part one to part 6. silent letters play a vital role in learning English pronunciation . with a view to learning pronunciation , there is no alternative to learn the rules of silent letter. if you want to improve your English pronunciation , you have to have good command on English silent letters.
now I am going to show you the silent letters in English words that belong to English alphabet from A – E. see the following rules and silent letters of different words.
Silent letters ‘A’
if there is ‘ally’ at the end of English words , ‘a ‘ will be silent in those words.
Example:
Basically, Musically, Romantically, Artistically, Logically .
in ‘Ea’ words, letter ‘ a’ will be silent.
Example:
Teach, Each, Peach, Team, Heave, Lead, Gear, Fear, Bread, Meant, Bean.
In ‘OA’ or ‘ AO’ words, letter ‘a’ will be silent.
Example:
Boar, Loan, Coal, Float, Cocoa, Pharaoh.
Silent letter ‘ B’
The ‘B’ is silent when preceded by an ‘m’ at the end of a word. that means ‘B’ will be silent .
Example:
Bomb, Tomb, Numb, Comb, Climb, Dumb, Plumber, Lamb, Thumb, Womb, Limb, Succumb,
The ‘ B’ is often silent in root when followed by a ‘T’ .
Example:
Debt, Doubt, Doubtful, Subtle

Exception in words obtain and obstruct.
Silent letter ‘ C’
The ‘c ‘ is silent preceded by ‘ S’ followed by an ‘E’ or ‘L’ at the very beginning of a word or in the combination of ‘ SC’ .
Example:
Ascend. Decend, Scene, Isosceles, Scenic, Scenario, Obscene, Crescent, Fascinate, Scissors, Conscience, Disciple, Muscle, Science, Sclera.
Silent Letter ‘D’.
‘D’ is not pronounced in the following common words
Handsome, Sandwich, Grandson, Handkerchief, Wednesday.
Letter ‘ D’ is also not pronounced in the combination ‘DG’ .
Example:
Dodge, Grudge, Ledger, Bridge, Wedge, Gadget, Hedge, Budget, Badge , Pleadge.
Silent Letter ‘ E’
Letter ‘E’ is not pronounced at the end of words, but instead elongates the sound of the vowel before it.
Example:
Fade, Hate, Tape, Tone, Price, Fate, Hike, Wife, Write, Like, Cute, Puke, Name, Cope, Ripe, Drive, Bite , Gave, Hide, Rate, Cube, Kite, Puke, Vegetable.
