Rare Footage Shows Life of Mao Zedong Video

Home
File footage shows the key events in the life of Mao Zedong, one of the pivotal figures of the 20th century who led China for almost three decades.

Mao was born into a rich farmer's family in a small village of Shaoshan in central Hunan province on December 26, 1893. Unlike other peasants' children, Mao was able to receive education made possible by his family wealth and travel to cities, where he met fellow Marxism followers and joined the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

From 1934-1935, Mao began his ascent to power during the Long March, a series of retreats by the Red Army to evade Chiang Kai-shek's pursuing Nationalist forces. After the 6,000 mile journey, Mao made Yan'an, a gritty north-western Chinese city, his power base for 13 years before taking control of China in 1949.

Japan expanded occupation of north-east China in 1936, the Nationalists joined a fragile "united front" with Communists to fight against the common threat. At the end of World War Two in 1945, the Nationalist-Communist civil war resumed.

Following a bloody civil war, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) entered Beijing after the Nationalists, with their leader Chiang Kai-shek, retreated to Taiwan.

Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong declared the founding of the People's Republic of China from the Gate of Heavenly Peace in Tiananmen Square on October 1, 1949.

Under Mao's leadership, China backed North Korea in the Korean War against U.S.-backed South Korea from 1950-1953.

From 1953 to 1957, China made its "transition to socialism", nationalising industry and putting farmland under collective control, with economic development helped by Soviet aid.

In 1958, Mao launched his "Great Leap Forward," a campaign intended to catapult China into advanced socialism by massively increasing industrial and farm output through collectivisation. The plan collapsed and brought widespread famine by 1961 that killed 30 million people, according to some expert estimates.

Relations with the Soviet Union deteriorated over Cold War policy and ideological disputes. China denounced Soviet leadership of the Communist bloc in 1961.

Mao was a fine swimmer. He swam in the Yangtze River at the age of 72 in 1966, in an attempt to demonstrate he was still vigourous, fit to lead his country.

Mao, fearing that his revolutionary achievements would be betrayed by compromise and "capitalist restoration", launched the Cultural Revolution in 1966, a violent campaign to rid the country of perceived ideological enemies, including senior Party officials.

Mao died on September 9, 1976. His successor Hua Guofeng and other veteran officials engineered the arrest of the "Gang of Four," the group of officials who wanted to continue the radical line of the Cultural Revolution and led by Mao's wife Jiang Qing. Hua Guofeng acted as leader for a few years while Deng Xiaoping, purged during the Cultural Revolution, returned to power and came to back reformist policies.

About the Site 🌐

This site provides links to random videos hosted at YouTube, with the emphasis on random. πŸŽ₯

Origins of the Idea 🌱

The original idea for this site stemmed from the need to benchmark the popularity of a video against the general population of YouTube videos. 🧠

Challenges Faced πŸ€”

Obtaining a large sample of videos was crucial for accurate ranking, but YouTube lacks a direct method to gather random video IDs.

Even searching for random strings on YouTube doesn't yield truly random results, complicating the process further. πŸ”

Creating Truly Random Links πŸ› οΈ

The YouTube API offers additional functions enabling the discovery of more random videos. Through inventive techniques and a touch of space-time manipulation, we've achieved a process yielding nearly 100% random links to YouTube videos.

About YouTube πŸ“Ί

YouTube, an American video-sharing website based in San Bruno, California, offers a diverse range of user-generated and corporate media content. 🌟

Content and Users 🎡

Users can upload, view, rate, share, and comment on videos, with content spanning video clips, music videos, live streams, and more.

While most content is uploaded by individuals, media corporations like CBS and the BBC also contribute. Unregistered users can watch videos, while registered users enjoy additional privileges such as uploading unlimited videos and adding comments.

Monetization and Impact πŸ€‘

YouTube and creators earn revenue through Google AdSense, with most videos free to view. Premium channels and subscription services like YouTube Music and YouTube Premium offer ad-free streaming.

As of February 2017, over 400 hours of content were uploaded to YouTube every minute, with the site ranking as the second-most popular globally. By May 2019, this figure exceeded 500 hours per minute. πŸ“ˆ
