WHALE 3D digital video billboard in Times Square, New York City Video

WHALE, a 3D digital art video billboard appears on a 30,000 square foot LED screen on the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, NYC in July 2021.

The creator of WHALE is d’strict, a Korean digital media company known for hyperrealistic spaces and experiences. The giant LED screen is owned by Silvercast Media and located above the newly renovated Pedestrian Plaza, in the middle of Times Square.

Although this movie appears as three dimensional, the illusion is created on a relatively thin LED wall on the sides of the hotel. Wave and whale audio effects were added in post to minimize crowd noise and potential copyrighted music.

As the cost of LED walls has gone down, 3D digital billboards have been growing in popularity. Most of the growth has been in large Asian metropolitan areas, especially Seoul, Korea and Tokyo, Japan.

In the future, we will likely see more of these exciting 3D displays. Perhaps one day the walls in our homes will display three dimensional scenes of any environment we can imagine!
