You probably already know how hard it is to photograph anything at night: it’s dark, and the built-in flash on your camera is is too weak to capture the details of a starry sky. The video will show you how even a beginner with no experience and no expensive equipment can take portrait photos at night in which your subject , and a fabulous starry sky are both visible in the frame.
When you pick the place for your shot, you need to consider anything that might cause problems. Shooting in the daytime and at night are two completely different stories. Anything you consider insignificant in daylight can become a key factor for a successful night-time shot.
So, what will you need for your night photo shoot?
1. A camera on which you can manually adjust the focus, display the aperture value (F-Stop) and the shutter speed
2. A tripod
3. A regular flashlight - one that you keep in your closet or car is just fine. It’s an indispensable source of light at night and will make your picture 1000 times better.
Our presenter explains step by step how to create beautiful portraits with the background of a starry sky using only these three basic items. Here’s how:
Step 1: Set the camera on the tripod. Line up the frame so that the subject and the sky are captured
Step 2: Shine the flashlight on the person and manually focus on him or her;
Step 3: Set the lowest aperture value so that as much light as possible passes to the lens, for example F/2.4 or F/1.8;
Step 4: Set the highest ISO value, for instance 6400 or 3200;
Step 5: Set the shutter speed to about 15 seconds;
Step 6: Turn off the flashlight and press the shutter button;
Step 7: During the 15sec exposure, draw the light from the flashlight across the person’s face as quickly as possible (no longer than 1-2sec) and immediately turn it off.
Step 8: Hooray! You've got your night photo with a softly illuminated subject and a beautiful starry sky in the frame.
