Key performance indicators are metrics that are used to observe the performance of some individual or company. I discuss why it is important to measure key performance indicators that are not observable.
This is part of my thesis help series, where I talk about things that are relevant to PhDs and people that are interested in doing a PhD.
This video crosses the line between business and PhD as I think it is an interesting topic that deserves much discussion as most people get these issues wrong.
Should you measure only the observable? When looking at key performance indicators, such as completion of a thesis, how a company is performing, how much somebody is improving, it is important to look at unobservable metrics.
There are many examples in the business world of KPIs, such as employee performance, operational key performance indicators, and financial key performance indicators.
Many people spend a substantial amount of money trying to figure out employee performance measurement tools and techniques and the best way to measure company performance.
There are many reasons why you should look at unobservable key performance indicators (KPIs). There are many reasons:
1. Most observable performance metrics where unobservable at one point. Rankings, accounting measures, and such are all made up by the observers.
2. Virtually nothing in this world is easily observed. Most things are pretty difficult to put your finger on and require a lot of discussion about the operationalization of key performance indicators.
3. The things that matter the most to companies and to your performance are often unobservable. We have know this for the last 30 years based on the resource based view. For example, how do you measure culture?
4. Measuring the unobservable is generally the start of a really interesting insights about the world. This is how we make substantial progress in science.
5. Most of the easily observable key performance indicators are operational in manner, and provide no foreshadowing of where you should go. They are lagging indicators of performance.
Take your time to develop good employee performance measurement tools and techniques. Also, take your time with thinking about how to measure the thing that youโre trying to measure during your PhD. This will greatly help you improve!

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.
r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform
A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.
The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.

This site provides links to random videos hosted at YouTube, with the emphasis on random. ๐ฅ
Origins of the Idea ๐ฑ
The original idea for this site stemmed from the need to benchmark the popularity of a video against the general population of YouTube videos. ๐ง
Challenges Faced ๐ค
Obtaining a large sample of videos was crucial for accurate ranking, but YouTube lacks a direct method to gather random video IDs.
Even searching for random strings on YouTube doesn't yield truly random results, complicating the process further. ๐
Creating Truly Random Links ๐ ๏ธ
The YouTube API offers additional functions enabling the discovery of more random videos. Through inventive techniques and a touch of space-time manipulation, we've achieved a process yielding nearly 100% random links to YouTube videos.
About YouTube ๐บ
YouTube, an American video-sharing website based in San Bruno, California, offers a diverse range of user-generated and corporate media content. ๐
Content and Users ๐ต
Users can upload, view, rate, share, and comment on videos, with content spanning video clips, music videos, live streams, and more.
While most content is uploaded by individuals, media corporations like CBS and the BBC also contribute. Unregistered users can watch videos, while registered users enjoy additional privileges such as uploading unlimited videos and adding comments.
Monetization and Impact ๐ค
YouTube and creators earn revenue through Google AdSense, with most videos free to view. Premium channels and subscription services like YouTube Music and YouTube Premium offer ad-free streaming.
As of February 2017, over 400 hours of content were uploaded to YouTube every minute, with the site ranking as the second-most popular globally. By May 2019, this figure exceeded 500 hours per minute. ๐
