Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 151,000 in January, lower than a downwardly revised 262,000 in the previous month and missing market expectations of 190,000.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported:
“Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 151,000 in January, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 4.9%. Job gains occurred in several industries, led by retail trade, food services and drinking places, health care, and manufacturing. Employment declined in private educational services, transportation and warehousing, and mining.
Both the number of unemployed persons, at 7.8 million, and the unemployment rate, at 4.9 %, changed little in January. Over the past 12 months, the number of unemployed persons and the unemployment rate were down by 1.1 million and 0.8 %, respectively.”
On the other hand, an increase in the length of the average working week and a 0.5% increase in weekly earnings will be taken by the Fed as evidence that the labour market is not quite as weak as the headline payrolls figure would suggest.
Gold initially fell some $15 immediately upon the announcement but currently stands at $1150 and silver fell 25 cents but recovered slightly to $14.77.
So disappointing figures which suggests that interest rates will not rise in March but also supports the case that the US, as well as the rest of the world are facing a poor economic growth scenario and in particular, further deflation lies ahead.
