The Story
Pennhurst Asylum was opened for children with epilepsy and mental disorders in 1908 and by 1913 it was extremely overpopulated. Pennhurst stated these children with disabilities were unfit for civilization and posed a threat to society. Eventually unfit parents would just dump off their children they no longer wanted to the asylum wether they were mentally challenged or not. This caused an overwhelmingly large amount of patients with a shortage of staff. Often times children were neglected, starved, and uncared for simply because there were not enough staff on board to help. Many children died in these buildings due to the neglegence and poor care of the asylum. The asylum was exposed in the 1960s when bill baldini ran a 5 episode tv special showing the cruel treatment to the children. One child was asked if you could have anything in the whole entire world, to fill your hearts desire, what would you want? She said to get out of pennhurst. Another employee was caught on film saying they wanted to inject a patient with a chemical that would cause the most discomfurt but not kill them. At this point it was inevitable the building would shut down but it took almost 20 years fighting legalities to shut it down. The Asylum has been abandoned since and has said to still hold many spirits of the children and patients who died on the premisis. Tonight we will go and explore ourselves
