Comprehensive exams are a usually 3-day exam where graduate students are asked any question about the literature they learnt for first 1-2 years of their PhD. Comprehensive exams are sometimes referred to as comps, cores, or candidacy exams. The questions on these graduate school exams could be about methodological concerns or theory concerns. Many people wonder how to pass comprehensive exams as they are the most difficult exams that most graduate students write.
However, comprehensive exams are also very enjoyable after you write the comps. You are able to summarize and make sense of a large literature. For example, in a Business PhD program, you might be able to put together several reasons why managers might operate a business in a certain way. Often, comprehensive exams make you see the bigger picture of theory that was difficult to see prior to that.
