What is the fear or insecurity that is preventing us from setting healthy boundaries? It's important to understand why you are afraid of being assertive with others in order to stop avoiding and change our behavior.
(2:32) 2. Set the Rules
You need to help people better understand how to treat you. Advocate for your needs and prevent people from crossing your boundaries by understanding what it is you need and want. Setting up expectations is an important part of setting boundaries.
(4:35) 3. Be Clear
Clearly ask for what we desire so your friends and family are very clear on what is ok and what is not. Don't beat around the bush or fail to clearly define what it is you're asking for.
(5:40) 4. Be Kind
Give others the benefit of the doubt before asserting your boundaries, and assume that they are not intentionally trying to hurt your feelings.
(6:48) 5. Be Unemotional
Take the emotion out before asserting your new boundaries so people can hear what you're trying to say.
(7:50) 6. Request vs. Command
In order to make a boundary acceptable by others and get their buy-in, ask them - don't tell them. Make it a request to get emotional buy-in and be successful with your boundaries.
