PLEASE NOTE: the DC-DC converter burned out after posting this video.I have since found a reference online that claims these have pretty strict amp limits, and can overheat and die if more current is applied. My PS was putting out 4.5 amps. The DC-DC convert had NO specs provided, and I was NOT checking the temperature.

And you'll see how I finally succeeded with my experiment.

I was curious if these LED strip lights (which you see everywhere) could be used as "regular" lighting, instead of just accent lighting. By checking the advertised rating for some of the brighter-rated LED strips, they were claiming 720 lumens per meter.

That is almost the same rating as a 60watt incandescent bulb. Incandescents are also omni-directional whereas LEDs are highly directional. So, if these are putting out roughly the equivalent of 60watt bulb for ever meter, then one of these strips should be equivalent to FIVE 60watt lightbulbs. That's a lot of light.

Unfortunately I do not have a light meter so these are all highly subjective conclusions.

One strip of LED lights is, in my view, not as bright a a conventional 4ft double fluorescent (old T11 style) fixture. However, TWO strips of LED lights are, again in my subjective eyes, equivalent.

However two strips of LEDs cost more, and consume more power.
But I do like the light, as it is more even and less concentrated.

You be the judge!

NOTE: after posting this video I was told that you can get a light meter app for your smartphone. I tried 3-4 different free android apps and all reported that the lux from the fluorescent was equal to the lux from the two LED strips. (586 lux; with the phone resting on the tablesawl.)

About the Site 🌐

This site provides links to random videos hosted at YouTube, with the emphasis on random. πŸŽ₯

Origins of the Idea 🌱

The original idea for this site stemmed from the need to benchmark the popularity of a video against the general population of YouTube videos. 🧠

Challenges Faced πŸ€”

Obtaining a large sample of videos was crucial for accurate ranking, but YouTube lacks a direct method to gather random video IDs.

Even searching for random strings on YouTube doesn't yield truly random results, complicating the process further. πŸ”

Creating Truly Random Links πŸ› οΈ

The YouTube API offers additional functions enabling the discovery of more random videos. Through inventive techniques and a touch of space-time manipulation, we've achieved a process yielding nearly 100% random links to YouTube videos.

About YouTube πŸ“Ί

YouTube, an American video-sharing website based in San Bruno, California, offers a diverse range of user-generated and corporate media content. 🌟

Content and Users 🎡

Users can upload, view, rate, share, and comment on videos, with content spanning video clips, music videos, live streams, and more.

While most content is uploaded by individuals, media corporations like CBS and the BBC also contribute. Unregistered users can watch videos, while registered users enjoy additional privileges such as uploading unlimited videos and adding comments.

Monetization and Impact πŸ€‘

YouTube and creators earn revenue through Google AdSense, with most videos free to view. Premium channels and subscription services like YouTube Music and YouTube Premium offer ad-free streaming.

As of February 2017, over 400 hours of content were uploaded to YouTube every minute, with the site ranking as the second-most popular globally. By May 2019, this figure exceeded 500 hours per minute. πŸ“ˆ
