Corrie ten Boom nació en Amsterdam, en el seno de la Iglesia Reformada. Su padre heredó una relojería en la que Corrie trabajó la mayor parte de su vida como relojera.
Tras el inicio de la Segunda Guerra mundial la familia empezó a ocultar judíos y miembros de la resistencia en su casa para protegerlos.
Sin embargo, en 1944 fueron delatados, capturados y enviados a prisión, y luego al campo de concentración de Ravensbrück. Nunca durante su tiempo en los campos perdió la oportunidad de predicar. Casi al final de la guerra es liberada, pero perdió a cuatro miembros de su familia.
Un día de 1947, en Munich, un hombre quiso saludarla; al ver su rostro, lo reconoció como uno de los guardianes más crueles de Ravensbrück. ¿Cómo podía darle la mano a ese hombre? Él le dijo que se había convertido al cristianismo después de la guerra y que creía que Dios lo había perdonado por todas las maldades, pero que necesitaba que ella personalmente le dijera que lo perdonaba. Corrie extendió su mano y lo perdonó como una muestra ferviente de su fe.
