How did Mr Darcy react when Elizabeth Bennett asked him to buy tampons? What happened when Jo March leaked on her dress at a ball? WaterAid’s Ten most awkward #PeriodDrama moments imagines how literary heroines dealt with their own period dramas.

Since the dawn of time, women have had periods – yet most of us still consider it an embarrassing and taboo subject. WaterAid launched its #PeriodDrama campaign to mark Menstrual Hygiene Day on 28 May and help remove the silence and stigma that surround periods.

Whilst our film is light-hearted, it aims to highlight the fact that more than one billion women across the world don’t have access to a toilet during their period. When there are no safe, private toilets in schools, girls often skip school during their period, or drop out of school altogether once they reach puberty. With nowhere hygienic to clean sanitary pads or wash, women and girls also risk infection.

Being able to deal with periods in a hygienic and dignified way is crucial to women’s wellbeing. Find out how you can help ensure every women and girl has access to water, safe toilets and somewhere to wash by 2030 at https://www.wateraid.org
