Mimmo from Aquila Corde recently sent me a set of the latest version of their red Nylgut strings. The plastic is loaded with metal powder in varying amounts to increase the mass of the string, rather than by just increasing the diameter. Apparently they used to do something similar with gut strings, saturating them with metal salts.
I’ve been using various kinds of Nygut strings for about ten years now and like the original cream ones as I think they sound and feel more like gut than nylon does. I have a set of the minstrel gauge on my 6-string (5 long and one short string) which have lasted at least eight years now, though it’s true it’s not a banjo I play very often.
The red strings have had some breakage problems as they’ve adjusted the formula. The last set I had (2015) were especially bad, with the 1st and 5th strings constantly breaking. It seems like they’ve made a lot of progress though as these 2018 strings are holding up much better. The first 4th string I had did break, but Mimmo was apparently already working on the problem and the replacement he sent me has held up for a few weeks now. I do find the strings tend to go out of tune easily and need a lot of tweaking. That will probably settle down eventually.
For something a little different, and as the strings are designed to be bright, I put them on my father’s flathead Gibson. It’s an interesting combination. The strings feel good under the fingers and I like the sound of the unwound 4th string a lot more than the last red version I had - it has a more rounded bass tone, closer to a wound string I find. If you use a little force the strings have a nice sharp sound, but can also produce a pretty tone with a little more delicateness, especially higher up the fretboard.
The tune is Boatin' up Sandy from Wilson Douglas, open G tuned down to fCFAC.
About the Site 🌐
This site provides links to random videos hosted at YouTube, with the emphasis on random. 🎥
Origins of the Idea 🌱
The original idea for this site stemmed from the need to benchmark the popularity of a video against the general population of YouTube videos. 🧠
Challenges Faced 🤔
Obtaining a large sample of videos was crucial for accurate ranking, but YouTube lacks a direct method to gather random video IDs.
Even searching for random strings on YouTube doesn't yield truly random results, complicating the process further. 🔍
Creating Truly Random Links 🛠️
The YouTube API offers additional functions enabling the discovery of more random videos. Through inventive techniques and a touch of space-time manipulation, we've achieved a process yielding nearly 100% random links to YouTube videos.
About YouTube 📺
YouTube, an American video-sharing website based in San Bruno, California, offers a diverse range of user-generated and corporate media content. 🌟
Content and Users 🎵
Users can upload, view, rate, share, and comment on videos, with content spanning video clips, music videos, live streams, and more.
While most content is uploaded by individuals, media corporations like CBS and the BBC also contribute. Unregistered users can watch videos, while registered users enjoy additional privileges such as uploading unlimited videos and adding comments.
Monetization and Impact 🤑
YouTube and creators earn revenue through Google AdSense, with most videos free to view. Premium channels and subscription services like YouTube Music and YouTube Premium offer ad-free streaming.
As of February 2017, over 400 hours of content were uploaded to YouTube every minute, with the site ranking as the second-most popular globally. By May 2019, this figure exceeded 500 hours per minute. 📈
