Filipinos mark Maundy Thursday with flagellation Video

(13 Apr 2017) Several hundred Catholic devotees in the Philippines marked Maundy Thursday with a bloody ritual to recall and honour the suffering of Jesus Christ on the cross.
The devotees, their faces covered with red or black cloth, walked along small busy streets subjecting themselves to punishment by whipping their bodies with chain and wood ended whips and visiting makeshift altar stations to pray and receive marks (cut) from marksmen of the station.
As part of their ritual, they also prayed kneeling with arms outstretched, and lay on their fronts, while others hit them on the back with wooden paddles.
In the Philippines, the rituals are considered a way for devotees to atone for their sins as well to ask for petitions.
