Porsche Boxster przez lata nazywane było “911 dla ubogich”. Czy to określenie nadal jest uzasadnione? Zacznijmy od krótkiej historii. Na początku lat 90. ubiegłego wieku Porsche było w finansowych tarapatach. Wtedy to zaprezentowano koncepcyjnego roadstera o nazwie Boxster, zainspirowanego modelami 356 i 550 Spyder. Pokazany światu na początku 1993 roku model koncepcyjny spodobał się i już trzy lata później pierwsze Boxstery trafiły na rynek. Nazwa Boxster pochodzi od używanego często przez Porsche silnika. Tzw. bokser to silnik, w którym cylindy ułożone są płasko i pracują w przeciwnych kierunkach. Cayman, czyli wersja coupe, pojawiła się dopiero 10 lat później, dwa lata po wprowadzeniu na rynek Boxstera drugiej generacji. Trzecia generacja zadebiutowała w 2012 roku, a w roku 2016 przyszedł czas na duży facelifting. Tak duży, że przed nazwą Boxster/Cayman pojawiła się liczba 718. 718 to z kolei nawiązanie do wyścigowego modelu 718 z przełomu lat 50. i 60. Podobnie jak Boxster, także 718 miał centralnie umieszczony silnik, tzn. za między fotelami, a tylną osią. I podobnie jak nowy Boxster, także 718 miał silnik 4-cylindrowy.
