Amtrak Coast Starlight: Los Angeles to Seattle scenery, dining, #roomette & sleeper car train. Video

Home
Review and Tips: Traveling on the #AmtrakCoastStarlight was like being on a sailboat. I saw spectacular scenery in pristine remote locations and graffiti art in urban areas only visible by train. The trip was relaxing and the #observationcar was one of my favorite places for looking out over the of the vast ocean, sunsets over lakes and mountain ranges with winding picturesque rivers while visiting with interesting individuals from all over the world and the US.

The cafรฉ has a nice selection of slightly pricey food items. The dining car is by reservation only and is a fun way to meet new people as it is shared seating. The menu is limited to four (4) entrees at each sitting and the food is made fresh and was tasty. #DiningCar Menu: https://goo.gl/dGCVLn

The meals were presented in an elegant fashion despite being on a moving train. The service was excellent. However, if you expect a four-star restaurant this is not for you. #Sleepingcar passengers have fresh coffee and fruit available in the morning and all meals are included for sleeping car passengers.

As with sailing, this trip is not for individuals that are so connected to their electronic devices that they cannot look out the window and savor the ever-changing landscape as the internet connection can be spotty or individuals in a rush to their next destination as your train may be late. WiFi is only available intermittently for business class and in the parlor car for sleeping car passengers.

Some people refer to this as the โ€œCoast Starlateโ€, however, I have now traveled from Los Angeles to Seattle round-trip on three occasions and the train was late one time.

When boarding the train you may want to bring: Camera/ cell phone, reading materials, portable drinks/ snacks; headphones; cards/ games, chargers for electrical devices and try downloading some audio books or movies before you leave. Comfortable shoes and layering as temperatures can vary on the train from night to day. Examples: Light shirt, sweat jacket, sweater or a Pashmina/ light scarf.

For your overnight bag I would suggest: Sweats and slip-on shoes for sleeping; underwear; socks and a shirt for the next day. Travel size toiletries: Toothbrush; toothpaste; mouthwash, dental floss; deodorant; facial wipes/ facial cleanser; dry shampoo or shampoo & conditioner; lotion for body & face and hair spray/gel. (Optional razor, hairdryers and a shower cap.) There are ample restrooms on the lower level and sleeping car passengers have access to showers. I brought one suitcase which I stowed on the lower level of the train and had the option of checking it in before boarding.

I have had the opportunity to make this trip in coach and in a sleeping car. Coach passengers have seats similar to a big easy boy chairs and I was comfortable sleeping at night. I would suggest bringing a small pillow; light blanket, earplugs and eye mask. Sleeping car passengers have chairs that convert into beds (bunk beds) at night which are very similar to a berth on a sail boat.

My personal experience with the #Amtrak staff was that they were hard-working and very helpful. It is important for passengers to know that they have a challenging job making sure that all their passengers are comfortable and safe while answering a multitude of questions; informing guests of pertinent information; making sure that passengers disembark at their appointed stations throughout all hours of the day and night and providing appetizing meals for hundreds of people and all with a smile and a warm greeting.

#Railway termini are our gates to the glorious and the unknown. Through them we pass out into adventure and sunshine, to them, alas! we return.

About the Site ๐ŸŒ

This site provides links to random videos hosted at YouTube, with the emphasis on random. ๐ŸŽฅ

Origins of the Idea ๐ŸŒฑ

The original idea for this site stemmed from the need to benchmark the popularity of a video against the general population of YouTube videos. ๐Ÿง

Challenges Faced ๐Ÿค”

Obtaining a large sample of videos was crucial for accurate ranking, but YouTube lacks a direct method to gather random video IDs.

Even searching for random strings on YouTube doesn't yield truly random results, complicating the process further. ๐Ÿ”

Creating Truly Random Links ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

The YouTube API offers additional functions enabling the discovery of more random videos. Through inventive techniques and a touch of space-time manipulation, we've achieved a process yielding nearly 100% random links to YouTube videos.

About YouTube ๐Ÿ“บ

YouTube, an American video-sharing website based in San Bruno, California, offers a diverse range of user-generated and corporate media content. ๐ŸŒŸ

Content and Users ๐ŸŽต

Users can upload, view, rate, share, and comment on videos, with content spanning video clips, music videos, live streams, and more.

While most content is uploaded by individuals, media corporations like CBS and the BBC also contribute. Unregistered users can watch videos, while registered users enjoy additional privileges such as uploading unlimited videos and adding comments.

Monetization and Impact ๐Ÿค‘

YouTube and creators earn revenue through Google AdSense, with most videos free to view. Premium channels and subscription services like YouTube Music and YouTube Premium offer ad-free streaming.

As of February 2017, over 400 hours of content were uploaded to YouTube every minute, with the site ranking as the second-most popular globally. By May 2019, this figure exceeded 500 hours per minute. ๐Ÿ“ˆ
