Around 30-million years ago the land bridge between Australia and Antarctica disappeared beneath the seas. The event created the Tasman Gateway, a seaway between the two continents, and allowed the cold Antarctic Circumpolar Current to encircle and chill Antarctica, with ongoing impacts on the global climate and weather. But the geology of the region’s seafloor remains largely a mystery. In August 2016 a team of scientists led by IMAS's Dr Jo Whittaker sailed on the CSIRO research vessel Investigator to collect samples from the seafloor off the south east coast of Tasmania, aiming to answer questions about how and when the Tasman Gateway opened.
