Today we talk about the 10 most common ways in which Orchids die, how to prevent them and even fix them!
▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼

1. Root rot: it's the result of the death of the root system, which then starts to break down and rot. Suffocation, acidic media and pathogens can affect severely an orchid's roots.

2. Crown rot: Monopodial orchids are especially at risk, due to the shape of the crown. If untreated this can be a fatal disease!

3. Sun burns: many orchids cannot handle direct noon sun, coupled with high temperatures spells disaster!

4. Dehydration: Too little water is just as bad as too frequent water in a non ventilated pot.

5. Fertilizer burn: As the water evaporates, excessive fertilizer deposits accumulate in the medium and on the roots, damaginng them!

6. Separating structures: Separating individual pseudobulbs and structures is never a good idea. All of them for one plant. But some of them can still survive, the development will be very slow though!

7. Cutting leaves: Aestethics should never come before the health of the plant, only cut leaves if they pose a threat to the orchid, or there are enough of them to not make a difference.

8. Trimming roots: Never do it! chose a bigger pot if the orchid got too big. Don't try to stimulate branching of the roots, you will risk infections, total death of the roots or extra energy spent on un programmed things.. energy that should have gone to the leaves.. or FLOWERS!

9. Temperature stress: Too hot or too cold, never a good environment for orchids. Heat stress, as well as cold stress can affect orchid health, lead to sunburn or infections. Unless you grow special orchids that want extreme temperatures, try to maintain things balanced.

10. Ignoring orchids: I know it's appealing, I know it's easy to be convinced it's ok, I know there are various people sticking to it and encouraging you to ignore your orchids. But DON"T DO IT! if you don't spot problems in time, how can you hope to fix them? Your orchids are yours, you paid for them, you live with them, you care for them, not the people chatting on forums and comments!
