Classification of Glycosides - Part 1 https://youtu.be/VeiOQ5zjJ6s
Introduction: No of medicinal plants containing organic constituents in conjugation with a sugar moiety .It can be 1or2 .such compounds are called as glycosides. They exert therapeutically significant effect on human and animals .Traditionally used in modern medicine because of their cardio tonic, purgative, analgesic, anti-arrhythmic, demulcent action.
Definition:-Glycosides are define as organic compound from plants and animal source, which on enzymatic hydrolysis gives one or more sugar moieties along with anon sugar moiety. Sugar moiety is called glycon and non sugar moiety is called aglycon or genin.
CLASSIFICATION:-
BASED ON THE CHEMICAL NATURE OF NON SUGAR MOIETY :-
1. Anthraquinone glycoside: Anthraquinone moiety as aglycon . Example sennoside in senna
2. Steroidal glycoside/ Cardiac glycosides: Aglycon portion is steroid molecule. Example Digitoxin in digitalis leaves
3. Saponine glycoside- Aglycone part is Tetracyclic triterpenoid saponin or steroidal triterpenoid (Dioscin in dioscorea ) Pentacyclic triterpenoid (glycyrrhizin in Liquorice)
4. Cyanogentic glycoside. Aglycon part contains hydrocyanic acid. Example Amygdalin in bitter almond.
5. Isothiocynate glycoside. if aglycone part contain thio (sulphur) along with nitrogencalled glycosides or isothiocyanate glycoside like sinigrin or sinalbin (-S=C=N-) (SCN). Example Sinigrin (black mustard).
6. Flavonoid glycoside. citrus bio flavonoid - Hesperidin
7. Coumarin glycoside or furano coumarine glycoside: Example Khellin in dried ripe fruits of visnaga.
8. Phenolic/ alcoholic glycosiedes if aglycone part contain alcohol group. Example Salicin (Salix spp. If aglycone pat is phenol called phenolic group like arbutin (Bearberry leaves)
9. Aldehyde glycoside if aglycone part aldehyde - this group called aldehydic group like glucovanillin in vanilla pods.
10. Glucosidal bitter or miscellaneous glycoside- Gentiopicrin in chirata, Andrographolide in kalmegh
