Using everyday examples, I explain WHY we adopt Occam's razor both in day-to-day reasoning and in science.

Parallel to the given everyday example I draw Copernicus' rejection of Ptolemaeus' geocentric model of the solar system on basis of theoretical simplicity. More about the importance of Copernicus' platonism can be read in Vesel's fantastic book from 2014.

Copernicus: Platonist Astronomer-Philosopher. Cosmic Order, the Movement of the Earth, and the Scientific Revolution. Author: Matjaž Vesel. Year: 2014.

After presenting the (historical) aesthetic justification, found in thinkers prior to the 20th century, I present an empirical and mathematical justification of this philosophical heuristic.
