Spur Making: Heat Treating Spur Rowels - Bit and Spur Making Videos by Bruce Cheaney - Spur Maker. High carbon steel from an old plow disk makes real good spur rowels that have a unique ring to them and the rowels will last forever. I used a cutting torch to cut out round circles from the old plow disk then heated them up to a cherry red and put them in lime until they cooled off. Next step was to belt sand them and put a coat of layout dye on them then transfer my rowel pattern onto the steel and the grind the spokes into the steel.
The main reason I softened the steel was so I could drill a hole in the center of the rowels for the rowel pins.
Once the holes were drilled and I did some hand filing on the spur rowel spokes I sanded the rowels and cleaned the up so the would be ready for heat treating.
As you can see I am heating the spur rowels with a small Victor cutting torch with a small heating tip and when the rowels reach a cherry red color I will quench them in Olive Oil.
After the rowels cool down I will temper the spur rowels to a dark straw color and they will be ready to clean up and polish.
