In late April 2019 we set out at dawn to do the loop track into and through Wilpena Pound. This video starts out in POV until the scrambly bits where it shows what the outside trail is like.
After reaching Tanderra Saddle in about 90 minutes we decided not to proceed to the summit. This was due to the strong cultural significance of this peak to the local Adnyamathanha people. At the welcome to country the night before the hike a local guide stated that "we are forbidden from going to the summit by our elders but when people are lost or injured up there we are forced to go up." Although the chance of something happening was unlikely, I couldn't put someone in this kind of situation.
There are many more mountains to climb and even without the summit this walk is stunning. The 12 kilometre inside trail is very easy once you get into the pound but the diverse range of habitats more than makes up for it.
