We could have a range expansion when momentum is moving the market, we will have opportunities range bound and times when it will go very quiet..etc These are different phases and cycles in the markets and we even get these cycles intraday. We get the open which is generally going to be a range expansion finding some values where buyers and sellers are coming in, then you have the mid-day stage when most traders are waiting for the USA markets to open and then you get the afternoon move. We also get the same on daily charts and you need to make sure you're using the right tools for the job. If you're trading range expansion the last thing you're doing is trying to fade new highs - range expansion mode is price moving thru highs or lows and continuing so you would need to use a strategy that gets you onboard that momentum. If the market is range trading you won't be looking to buy new highs; you're waiting for the extremes to run out steam and fade these back to the mean reversion. There is nothing more frustrating trying to force your strategy onto a market that is just not happening.
