"Chansonette" was published in 1923, the year of this recording. Friml reworked this popular song into "The Donkey Serenade" in the 1930s for the film version of his operetta, "The Firefly."
The photographs are from a family collection, collected by my mother and her two sisters in the 1920s by writing to the stars and asking for autographed pictures, which arrived in the mail. To this day, the collection of pictures resides in the same box in which it was placed about 80 years ago, rarely seeing the light of day since then. I find these mementos from a vanished era fascinating and believe that Youtube is a good place to share them.
Included in this video are Clara Kimball Young, Adolphe Menjou, Lila Lee, Jack Mulhall, Nita Naldi, Jack Pickford, Lois Wilson, Richard Bartelmes, and Norma Talmadge. (The sixth presentation using photos from this collection.)
In the picture of the Buffington children, seen near the beginning of the video, the two in the middle are my mother and her twin brother. Today, July 9, they would have celebrated their 95th birthdays!
