Nossa história começa no Mar da Tasmânia, que fica entre a Austrália e a Nova Zelândia. É exatamente aqui que o Arquipélago de Lorde Howe permanecia tranquilo até 1788. Aquele ano mudaria tudo na história deste lugar perdido, pois o comandante britânico Henry Lidgbird Ball descobriu a parte central da ilha quando estava a caminho da Ilha de Norfolk. Depois de cumprir sua missão, o comandante Ball estava indo pra casa quando resolveu proclamar a descoberta de um novo território para o seu país. Naquela época, ninguém poderia imaginar as surpresas que esta ilha guardava para que as pessoas descobrissem décadas depois!
Depois da descoberta de Ball, as pessoas já tinham começado a viver permanentemente lá em 1834. Mesmo tendo apenas 11 km de comprimento, a ilha principal de Lorde Howe representou (e ainda representa) um cenário idílico de um paraíso tropical. Já o resto das ilhotas que pertencem ao arquipélago são feitas de rochas vulcânicas e não são habitadas.
