Your Daily Dosage of Inspiration Video

Home
This is a Public Service Announcement (PSA) about how some disabled people feel about being called inspirational. Some of us feel that it shows that people have lowered expectations for us when they call us inspirational or amazing for going about our daily lives with disabilities.

Disability is not something terrible that needs to be fixed, cured, or made to go away forever. It is a natural part of reality. We ask for acceptance as equal members of society.

Description of the video:

(All of the speech is done as a voice over. So you don't see the actress speaking.)
A black screen with the title "Your Daily Dosage of Inspiration" in curly cursive appears. The letter "i"s are dotted with stars.
The words twirl off the screen as if they're being flushed down the toilet.
A 30-something white woman sits in a high-backed power wheelchair. She wears glasses, a black shirt, blue skirt with white lace, and tights. She is at a 1960s style metal kitchen table. On the table are a burning white pillar candle, lighter, potted plant, composition notebook, and a mug of tea. The mug has a red crab on it and says "I'm crabby." A straw sticks out of her tea.
She pulls the mug toward her and bends forward deeply to reach the straw. She sits up and sighs.
The woman opens her composition notebook, "Hmm."
She writes in the diary. "Dear Diary. Today was inspirational. I was inspirational. I found a reason to get out of bed."
She chews on her pen tip, thinking hard, then writes again.
"I knew it was up to me to make this day great."
She brushes her hair in a full-length mirror near a bookshelf.
"I did a lot. I even brushed my hair. It was quite a workout and gave me a lot to ponder. Sometimes I forget why God put me here, but then I remember."
She is in front of flowery curtains. She pulls off her glasses seductively, tosses her hair, ticks the end of one glasses temple in her mouth and stares flirtatiously at the camera. She uses one hand to support the hand that holds her glasses.
"My job is making the able-bodied feel better about themselves."
She types at her desktop computer. Her iPhone on the table lights up. She looks at it happily. She uses both hands to pick up the phone, flips her hair, and speaks into it.
"Much to my surprise and delight, somebody called me! [phone rings] Hello? Hi!"
She is back at the table writing in her journal. She looks thoughtfully at the ceiling as she ponders her accomplishments then goes back to writing.
"Sure was nice to be able to pick up the phone. Being wheelchair-bound gets awfully lonely."
She is at her computer , typing quickly with two fingers on her right hand. She takes the mouse and laughs at the screen.
"Then I found some totally kick-ass affirmations on the world wide web. I just learned you can find almost anything on there, LOL!"
Back at the table, writing.
"Now I feel ready to get out there and show the world my smile, not my disability. I can overcome anything with a positive attitude!"
She races across the living room, opens the door, and leaves.
"Wow! Ta ta for now, Caitlin."
A handwritten image of her name appears on the screen as she goes out the door into a very bright day. She has dotted the "i"s with hearts. The scene fades to black.
Words show up on the screen: "Disabled people completing everyday tasks is not inspirational. It's normal. It's time to challenge the ableism in having lowered expectations for people with disabilities. 'Special' and 'inspirational' are stereotypes. Get to know us and work with us to remove the barriers in society that these stereotypes maintain.

About the Site 🌐

This site provides links to random videos hosted at YouTube, with the emphasis on random. πŸŽ₯

Origins of the Idea 🌱

The original idea for this site stemmed from the need to benchmark the popularity of a video against the general population of YouTube videos. 🧠

Challenges Faced πŸ€”

Obtaining a large sample of videos was crucial for accurate ranking, but YouTube lacks a direct method to gather random video IDs.

Even searching for random strings on YouTube doesn't yield truly random results, complicating the process further. πŸ”

Creating Truly Random Links πŸ› οΈ

The YouTube API offers additional functions enabling the discovery of more random videos. Through inventive techniques and a touch of space-time manipulation, we've achieved a process yielding nearly 100% random links to YouTube videos.

About YouTube πŸ“Ί

YouTube, an American video-sharing website based in San Bruno, California, offers a diverse range of user-generated and corporate media content. 🌟

Content and Users 🎡

Users can upload, view, rate, share, and comment on videos, with content spanning video clips, music videos, live streams, and more.

While most content is uploaded by individuals, media corporations like CBS and the BBC also contribute. Unregistered users can watch videos, while registered users enjoy additional privileges such as uploading unlimited videos and adding comments.

Monetization and Impact πŸ€‘

YouTube and creators earn revenue through Google AdSense, with most videos free to view. Premium channels and subscription services like YouTube Music and YouTube Premium offer ad-free streaming.

As of February 2017, over 400 hours of content were uploaded to YouTube every minute, with the site ranking as the second-most popular globally. By May 2019, this figure exceeded 500 hours per minute. πŸ“ˆ
