Have you ever tried to make your own laundry detergent? There are a plethora of reasons to try it, but I'll name the reasons that immediately come to mind for me:

1. It saves money
2. You know what you're using
3. Gentle on the skin (when you use THIS recipe)
4. No synthetic dyes or chemicals (when you use this recipe)

Now, on to the recipe!

3 cups 20 Mule Team Borax
3 cups Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda
1 cup finely grated laundry-bar soap or castile bar soap (Dr. Bronners, Fels Naptha, Unscented Ivory are my recommenations)
OPTIONAL: 10-20 Essential oil drops, preferred scent. Added to each load

Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix well with a whisk until thoroughly combined! Transfer to an air tight storage container. DONE!

Directions: Use APPROXIMATELY 1/4 per REGULAR SIZED load. Keep in mind, depending on your washer and load size, you may need to use more or less. Try it with less first, and add more if needed.

IS THIS SAFE FOR HE WASHERS? HIGH EFFICIENCY laundry detergents are made for HE washers because they are low suds. This recipe is in fact low suds. I use it with my HE washer and have not experienced problems. However, do read the owners manual for YOUR specific washer or call the manufacturer to see if it is compatible.

Do your clothes need an extra boost of "freshness?" Mix in a tablespoon of baking soda with your detergent BEFORE you toss it in the washer!

Want to add some scent to your detergent? Add a few drops of essential oil to the load OR use the "Dr. Bronner's" brand of castile soaps. There are several scents available!
