Today is Thursday 15th December 2016 and we are briefly commenting upon an article published by the BBC today concerning the use of Gold in eye blindness treatments.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a painless eye condition that causes you to lose central vision, usually in both eyes, which makes; reading difficult, colours appear less vibrant and faces can be hard to recognise.
AMD affects more than 600,000 people in the UK and is the leading cause of vision loss.
According to the US National Eye Institute:
‘By 2050, the estimated number of people with AMD in the US is expected to more than double from 2.07 million to 5.44 million. White Americans will continue to account for the majority of cases. However, Hispanics will see the greatest rate of increase, with a nearly six-fold rise in the number of expected cases from 2010 to 2050.’
In addition, as AMD is more prevalent the older one becomes, as women generally have a longer life expectancy than men, they are therefore more likely to develop AMD. In 2010, 65% of AMD cases were in women compared with 35% in men.
There are two main types – ‘wet AMD’ and ‘dry AMD’
Researcher Dr Johan Basuki, from Australia's government-backed CSIRO, is quoted in the article:
"The idea is to develop a 'drug reservoir' that can be implanted in the eye and then use visible light to trigger the drug that is embedded in the hydrogel ……. To do that we are using gold nanoparticles which have been known as a safe, inert, non-reactive component in the biomedical field."
This Gold nanotechnology could help reduce the number of injections needed to treat AMD and whilst further research is necessary before human trials are considered, tests on rabbits have shown excellent results.
The reason we mention this is to draw to your attention that like silver, gold too is being applied to medicinal treatments and may, albeit sometime in the future, become an important demand consideration.

This site provides links to random videos hosted at YouTube, with the emphasis on random. 🎥
Origins of the Idea 🌱
The original idea for this site stemmed from the need to benchmark the popularity of a video against the general population of YouTube videos. 🧠
Challenges Faced 🤔
Obtaining a large sample of videos was crucial for accurate ranking, but YouTube lacks a direct method to gather random video IDs.
Even searching for random strings on YouTube doesn't yield truly random results, complicating the process further. 🔍
Creating Truly Random Links 🛠️
The YouTube API offers additional functions enabling the discovery of more random videos. Through inventive techniques and a touch of space-time manipulation, we've achieved a process yielding nearly 100% random links to YouTube videos.
About YouTube 📺
YouTube, an American video-sharing website based in San Bruno, California, offers a diverse range of user-generated and corporate media content. 🌟
Content and Users 🎵
Users can upload, view, rate, share, and comment on videos, with content spanning video clips, music videos, live streams, and more.
While most content is uploaded by individuals, media corporations like CBS and the BBC also contribute. Unregistered users can watch videos, while registered users enjoy additional privileges such as uploading unlimited videos and adding comments.
Monetization and Impact 🤑
YouTube and creators earn revenue through Google AdSense, with most videos free to view. Premium channels and subscription services like YouTube Music and YouTube Premium offer ad-free streaming.
As of February 2017, over 400 hours of content were uploaded to YouTube every minute, with the site ranking as the second-most popular globally. By May 2019, this figure exceeded 500 hours per minute. 📈
