Since september I (try to) write and share one song a week. This is # 19.
I'm not in the habit of writing songs about random people I see on the street. But this one kept passing me on an almost daily basis. At first I didn't really notice him, but slowly his story started growing in my head. The first two sentences of the song popped into my mind and stayed there for a few months. And though I tried to deny them, or push them away, they kept coming back. I reckon that if something sticks, it's my job to work it out. So here it is, a song about a man walking his dog.

Portrait of a man walking his dog

He’s walking his dog on a leash
everyday through my street
with his silent slippers on
He get’s scared easily
everytime I try to greet
him he recoils and shivers like it’s cold

Where is the woman that left him
What kind of girl did him wrong
Who’s the mother that shook him
shook him from her restless womb

He’s walking his dog on a leash
everyday through my street
with his silent slippers on
He never goes very far
across the bridge, around the park
than back to where he started from

Where is the woman that left him
What kind of girl did him wrong
Who’s the mother that shook him (shook hoog)
shook him from her restless womb

He’s walking his dog on a leash
everyday through my street
with his silent slippers on
His trousers are frayed along the edge
he only wears one pair of them
his socks are red as if by mistake

Where is the woman that left him
What kind of girl did him wrong
Who’s the mother that shook him (shook hoog)
shook him from her restless womb

He’s walking his dog on a leash
everyday through my street
with his silent slippers on
But sometimes, sometimes
he smiles back
