The International Monetary Fund agreed today to add the Chinese Yuan to its reserve currency basket. The addition of the yuan, or renminbi, will take effect in October 2016. It will join the euro, yen, pound and dollar in the reserves basket. The yuan will have a 10.92% percent weighting in the SDR.
This decision marks another step in China's global economic emergence and came after the IMF evaluated the Asian nation's standing as an exporter and the yuan's role as a "freely usable" currency. In a statement, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde noted the yuan's inclusion as a "clear representation of the reforms" taking place in China.
She added:
"The continuation and deepening of these efforts will bring about a more robust international monetary and financial system, which in turn will support the growth and stability of China and the global economy,"
The IMF said the yuan's inclusion will make the SDR ‘more diverse and representative of the international community.’
So there we have it. China has become sufficiently transparent and undertaken the necessary reforms to be accepted within the Reserve Currency Club. Now before all gold and silver holders jump up and down and claim ‘imminent gold and silver price rises’. Let’s not forget, they will not be included until October 2016 and also heed the words “the IMF decision will push the government to continue helping its yuan capital market mature - with more diversified products and active market transactions both onshore and off” – yes you guessed it – more debt and investment products to look forward to.
Meanwhile today gold has risen today by just under $7 at $1064 and silver is down 2cents at $14.08.
