One thing I thought about recently is how important graduate student - advisor relationships are to the academic career.

5. phd supervisor problems

What? How can that be?! Why does this occur? There are 4 reasons for this difficulties with graduate student - advisor:
1. Its a long-term relationship, so keep that in mind when you start working on a project. Its going to take you longer than you think.
2. Ambiguous norms. First of all, anytime there is ambiguity, try to be explicit as much as you possibly can at all times.
3. Creation of knowledge. Creating ideas is very difficult, and often no one knows for sure who’s knowledge is who’s when you are making ideas. Try to be as clear as possible at all times, always.
4. Advisor’s are people too. Realize that they are working out their own issues and dealing with their own stresses. We are all freaked out just as you are.
To build relationships, (1) try to meet on a regular basis, (2) take your time, and (3) ask others for advice on what your role is.
