The BMW 4 Series is, without a doubt, one of the greatest cars BMW have ever built. Unfortunately, though, BMWs are not cheap to maintain and own, which is why we've breaking down the cost to own a BMW 4 Series for one year. Before we get into the ownership costs for a BMW 428i, I do want to mention that we drove this car over 32,000 in the FIRST year alone. To be fair, the cost to own a BMW 4 Series is likely much less than what we spent, as we drove our BMW 428i almost 3 times the national average.
Let's get into the details of how much it costs to own a BMW 4 Series for one year starting with how much we paid for the BMW 428i in January 2017. Our purchase price for the BMW 4 Series was approximately $24,000 when the car had just around 50,000 miles on the clock. Unfortunately, we had just purchased a BMW 7 Series (750 Li xDrive) that lost $7,000 in value since we purchased it just 3 months before!
Because the BMW 750Li xDrive had lost so much value in the three months we owned it, we had to finance the additional $7,000 onto the purchase price of the car. That works out to be a financed amount of $31,000 for the BMW 428i with 50,000 miles... If you've ever owned a BMW 7 Series from 2011 with the valve stems issue, you'll know quickly why we sold the car.
The payment for the BMW 428i works out to be $491.52 each month. The yearly payment for the BMW 4 Series ends up being $5,898.24. On top of the monthly payment for the BMW 4 Series, another cost of owning a BMW 428i is the insurance. To insure the BMW 4 Series with full coverage, we pay about $181.96/month. The yearly insurance premium works out to be $2,183.52.
Another cost of BMW ownership is fuel. While the BMW 428i is a very fuel efficient vehicle, we end up driving the car quite a lot (as you would expect for putting 32,000 miles on it in one year). The monthly fuel cost for the BMW 4 Series is $120 while averaging around 24 MPG. That works out to a yearly cost of $1,440 to put gas in the BMW 4 Series. It's not awful, but it is a huge cost of BMW ownership.
The biggest cost to own a BMW 4 Series is the maintenance and repairs. The maintenance cost for the BMW 428i for the last year (and 32,000 miles) works out to be $4,732.40. The maintenance that was required for the BMW 428i was new tires, brakes, fixing two oil leaks, brake fluid, oil changes (lots of oil changes), and misc. other services. All of these add up to cost to own a BMW 4 Series.
Our total cost to own a used BMW 4 Series for 1 year was a total of $14,254 or around $1,187.85 each month to own a BMW 428i. Truthfully, the cost to own the BMW 4 Series has not been too awful, considering it's been driven over 32,000 in 12 months.
