I discuss why people pursue a PhD. Obtaining a PhD is largely a personal choice. What should pull people is:
Why you should not get a PhD.
1. Money. You will be underpaid.
2. Status. You will actually have very low status for a long time.
3. To Find the Opposite Sex. You are likely not going to meet many people during a PhD.
4. To Become A Consultant Or Go Into Industry. Nobody will support this idea.
Why should you decide to get a PhD?
1.The love of knowledge. Obtaining a PhD is a very expensive degree to obtain, and you have to prioritize all else to obtain it.
2. Curiosity. Obtaining a PhD should a burning desire that cannot be solved. If you are merely curious, than you are likely not going to complete the degree.
3. Furiously motivated to make a difference. You have to believe what you are doing matters to the world.
4. Competitive. You get stuck or sucked into the competitive nature of the PhD. Everything in academia is a mild competition in which you compete.
5. Hope for a better life. Many people choose a PhD to increase their social economic status and standard of living.
