You often hear that there is an oversupply of PhD degrees and a lack of demand. Supply is the production of PhD’s that are granted. Demand is the extent to which firms and universities find PhD useful, and those with a PhD are employable.
This results in many people with PhDs have a difficult time finding a job. There appears to be a glut of PhDs.
However, the problem is likely not supply and demand but a problem of search costs, perception, and uncertainty of motives during the PhD.
Search costs. Search costs in this context are the transaction cost affiliated with searching for people with relevant skills.
Perception. Is often difficult to communicate exactly when a person is currently working on because they are at the cutting edge of science. Often, the PhD candidate themselves does not have a good grasp of their own skills.
Uncertainty of motives. Many PhD’s enter the market for many different reasons beyond employability. These different motives weaken the signal of the value of a PhD.
