In this video, I talk about financial planning during a PhD. PhD financial planning is important to discuss, and I think about financial planning because the PhD is extremely long in most PhD students lack financial resources.
This is part of my thesis help series, which is about everything I wish I would have known in graduate school. It is useful for those interested in doing a research Masters, a PhD, or a doctorate in business (DBA).
Some PhD students are lucky enough to get financial support through grants or through their institution. This helps out with greatly improving your odds of surviving a PhD. In fact, I’d highly recommend not to perform a PhD unless you have those resources.
During a PhD, I would recommend that every PhD student do the following:
1. Read a personal finance book! Personal finance in grad school is one of the biggest predictors of people doing well. I like Dave Ramsey.
2. Try not to accumulate anymore student debt. Saving money is going to be tough, you should just focus on not going in debt.
3. Try to save for an additional year beyond what you thought the PhD would take.
4. Limit other responsibilities beyond research, such as teaching or consulting.
The PhD is very long and you should think about how you can sustain this pace for a long period of time beyond what you thought it was going to take.
