If you have 100:1 leverage you can control USD100 with every $1 worth of currency. This gives you more 'bang for your buck'.
Let's say you have a $500 mini account in forex.
Let's suppose you go long 5 x $10k lots of GBP/USD. If the spread on that GBP/USD pair is 5 pips your spread is going to cost you $25 which is 5% of your account.
So 10 trades of this position size would have your account down by 50%.
This comes into the whole basket of selecting what kind of trader you are going to be; how much risk are you going to deal in a trade, whether you are going to be a short-term trader, how frequently you are going to trade and the overnight financing fees you will incur for holding positions overnight..etc
Be mindful that you're not overusing leverage - leverage can be a very useful tool but it can also be lethal. If you're trading with high leverage on a small account then it can be detrimental.
