An equity long-short strategy is an investing strategy utilised principally by hedge funds, that involves taking long positions in stocks that the fund managers believe will rise in value and short positions in stocks that they think will decrease in value.

Understanding Hedge Fund Strategies: Equity Long / Short The Long, Short Equity is a popular trading strategy adopted by many funds. Such a fund will buy a stock they believe is underperforming and is going to move higher and they will short a stock they believe is overrated and will go lower. Often they will look at trades in specific sectors; like for instance Tesco and Sainsburys or Fedex and UPS or Twitter and Facebook..etc. A lot of hedge also have a 130%, 30% rule which means that they will have 130% of their portfolio in long positions and 30% of their portfolio in short positions to give them a long bias but they still have some short exposure.
