Today is Tuesday 15th November 2016 and we are briefly looking at US retail sales for October and what it means for the dollar and interest rates.
The Commerce Department reported today that retail sales rose 0.8% in October from the month before, and were up 4.3% from a year earlier. In addition, September's sales increase was revised up from 0.6% to 1.0%.
In addition to a strong demand for building materials as a result of hurricane Matthew, car sales rose 1.1% last month after an increase of 1.9% in September
A mix of positive jobs data where August and September figures were revised upwards and 160,000 jobs having been gained in October, plus this news announced today, will indeed strengthen the case for increased interest rates in December.
This was further reflected by an increase in the value of the dollar following today’s announcement with the dollar index breaching the 100 mark and currently stands at 100.15.
Gold is holding fast at $1225 and silver at $17.08 but undoubtedly downward pressure is still being exerted.
