В семье директора завода комуниста Вишняка вместе с его детьми Мариной и Валерием воспитывается приемный сын Шура Бадекин, отец которого погиб на фронте. Дети хорошо учатся, дружат между собой. Однако в характере Валерия все больше проявляются себялюбие, эгоизм, заносчивость. Однажды отец заметил, что Валерий перестал носить пионерский галстук. Оказывается, подросток отказался выполнить поручение отряда и сам снял с себя галстук. На совете отряда Шура Бадекин осудил поведение друга, но его поведение Валерий расценил как предательство...
