Should you focus on building an automated strategy rather than a manual strategy? Is automated trading inherently more profitable than manual trading? Is quantitative / algorithmic trading better than traditional trading?
Automated Trading: Advantages Vs. Manual Trade Execution
Manual Trading – happens when traders decide to physically place trades themselves by logging onto their brokerage account. They choose the market to trade and set the stop loss/limit criteria and click on 'buy' or 'sell' to execute the trade.
Automated trading – the trades develops software which executes that trades for him with manual intervention other than setting parameters at the system to program the system.
For
- Removes some emotion - this is the obvious pull for people to turn to automation systems and robots. And it will to some extent. However, you still need to program all the parameters of the system so you have a big learning curve.
- We can still put automated entry or stop orders into a manual trading system.
- We are going to have good data on the strategy or trading system. We know exactly the rules of the system and we know how it has performed so we can be very objective in our decisions.
Against
- Learning Curve - and you still have some emotion with the trading system since its your money that is at risk. Are you going to risk X? What happens if you lose Y? Will you overrule the system paramaters or will you sit down the drawdown or will you cut the system?
- Safety parameters - when making a trading system we need to be careful it doesn't blow out and it has stringent safety parameters.
- Still requires risk analysis - we can't just say that we're leave the system, how long will we allow the system if it encounters a series of losing trades for instance.
- Takes away the intuition from our trading.
